Laying floorboards… the right way!

Who doesn’t love floorboards?! They’re timeless, gorgeous, functional, and work with every style of interior! When it comes to laying floorboards though… I want you to have a think about a few things!

Here wo go:

1. The size of the actual boards themselves that you use (even if laminate, bamboo etc)
2. The direction that you lay the boards (again, or lino, laminate etc)

It does make a difference to the look of a room. Call it Feng shui if you like… me, I can just look at it and my body goes mmmm nope… but that’s a designers eye 🙂 I want you to think about these things though before you have them installed:

1. The size of the room
2. The natural walkway of the room
3. The existing pieces in the room and/or pieces you’re going to add to the room and where they are positioned/ are going to position them.

WHY?

Because the above points can determine whether the floor alone gives the room a larger or smaller feel… and it can change the natural flow of a room when furnishings are put in place. Think of it like this, a footpath… it flows… you follow it. Now think of a pedestrian crossing with the lines going the opposite way you walk. It slows you down… hinders you almost… makes you hesitant.

Imagine yourself walking through the spaces of these pictures. When the boards run parallel with the hallways, or longest length of the room, it gives a big free flowing feel to the space. The boards going the other direction (ie not running parallel to the long side of the kitchen island bench)… it just doesn’t feel the same. More boards make this space feel smaller than it probably is. Absolutely each to their own with choice, but you’ll see what I mean when you look at the pictures.

When you go to install floorboards next time, think of it like this… path or pedestrian crossing. Which would you prefer in your home?
